Headstone inscriptions are an important source for researching the people and families associated with Ballyoughter and the surrounding area. About the Records
The headstone records were compiled by the Graveyard Committee of the North Wexford Historical Society. Individual records may include a photograph and transcription of the inscription together with details such as the deceased person’s name, address, date of death and age, the type and dimensions of the headstone, its maker where known, and information identifying its position within the graveyard.
These records document recorded headstones and should not be regarded as a complete burial register. A person may have been buried in a cemetery without being named on a surviving or recorded headstone, so the absence of a name from the database does not necessarily mean that the person was not buried there.
How to Search the Records
- Select the cemetery you wish to search.
- Search using a surname, first name, address, date of death or other available field.
- Open an individual result to view the full headstone record and transcription.
- If you cannot find someone immediately, try searching by surname only or by associated place name.
Search tip: The North Wexford Historical Society notes that its search results identify a headstone using the first-named deceased person recorded on it. Other family members commemorated on the same headstone may appear only within the full inscription and may therefore not appear in an initial name search.
Using Headstones for Family Research
A single headstone can sometimes connect several generations of a family. In addition to names and dates, inscriptions may identify spouses, parents, children, places of residence or relatives who died elsewhere. When combined with Ballyoughter’s parish registers, census records and other records, these inscriptions can help build a much fuller picture of local families over time.
