Celebrating 100 Years

Ballyoughter National School celebrated the centenary of its official recognition by the State on December 10th 1989.

A celebratory Thanksgiving Mass was held in the Church of the Sacred Heart with the chief celebrant, Dr Brendan Comiskey, Bishop of Ferns, being ably assisted by three clergymen who were past pupils of the school.

As part of the celebration,  a commemorative plaque (inscription: AD 1889-1989 Ballyoughter National School Centenary) was placed over the original plaque (inscription: 1889). The original plaque can be seen above the window of the entrance porch in the photograph of the one-classroom school from c.1920.
