School Staff

School staff members who served in Ballyoughter National School are listed below. 

The earliest record of a school in the area is from 1824 when the teacher was Denis Synnot and the school building was located on the church grounds.

The first teacher appointed to the multi-denominational school built with funds secured from the Earl of Courtown was Alice O’Neill in 1872.

The first teacher appointed to the official state sanctioned school built in 1889 was Mary Tugman (née Brennan). She was followed by Michael O’Sullivan for a brief period of 2 years. Legend has it that he travelled from County Kerry on horseback to take up his position. He is recorded as a boarder in the Whitty Household on the 1901 census returns for Clonmore.

Julia Lawlor (Brennan) has the distinction of being the longest serving teacher in the school’s history for her service spanning 46 years from 1907 to 1953. This record is not likely to be broken any time soon.

Patrick Sheehan holds the record as longest serving Principal covering the period from 1938 to 1980.

Bernie Kavanagh became the first non-teaching staff member at Ballyoughter National School when appointed as school secretary.

The school was allocated its first SNA position at the turn of the Millenium and Yvonne Ryan was appointed to the position.
